About
Praia Grande
In the final stretch of the Arade River estuary, the sandy beach is protected by the two jetties of the river and framed by crested cliffs lined with vigorous Mediterranean vegetation.
To the north of the beach stands the Fort of S. João do Arade, a structure that, along with the Fortress of Santa Catarina, guaranteed the defense of the estuary before the attacks of piracy.
Not far away, a bit further upstream, you can see the white houses of the village of Ferragudo, an old fishing village, now a small town worthy of a visit.
